Under the National Wetland Conservation Programme, there are total 68 such places which have been marked for conservation in the country. This list includes 35 mangroves, 4 coral areas and 10 urban lakes. These wetland sites have been identified based upon Ramsar criteria which are classified on the basis of waterfowl population, domains of various plant or animal species, biodiversity, cultural aspects, religious and sacred sanctities, socio-economic aspects, sustainable fisheries, traditional knowledge, etc. In addition to this, the proposed National Wetland Strategy also puts a immense focus on the importance of wetlands of water supply, coastal protection, food security and improvement of livelihood of wetland people.

The Ramsar Convention is an international treaty for the conservation and sustainable use of wetlands. It is also known as the Convention on Wetlands. The Convention’s mission is “the conservation and wise use of all wetlands through local and national actions and international cooperation, as a contribution towards achieving sustainable development throughout the world.”
